Rona Campbell’s award winning Ice Dance Poems & Photography project received an Arts Council Wales Grant in October 2011 and subsequently was exhibited in seven art galleries in England and Wales, where she performed the poems and ran workshops for schools.
Ice Dance is poet Rona Campbell’s first digital book featuring her poetry and fine art photography. The inspiration was the ice crystals found on her kitchen windows in Wrexham, North Wales. The photography then expanded to include ice in the rivers, bogs and waterfalls of North Wales. The poems were also inspired through her research into ice crystals, and ice found in the Polar Regions. Examples of this are found where Nature is portrayed as an embroiderer of the Tundra, ('Nature's Needlepoint') and a glacier as giving birth to an iceberg, called Glacier Girl.

Rona Campbell’s book left me cold.I suppose it’s not surprising that a collection of her photographs and poems about ice would do that. As I write this review, it’s mid-winter in Kansas and the scenes Campbell describes in her native Wales could as easily be seen on my windows and in my back yard. Winter is like that -- it’s universal. Yet there is something about the way she weaves together her photos and words that make her scenes completely unique. That “dendrite tree” could only grow on her kitchen window and she makes the bog hers alone.
As a photographer, too, I admire her perseverance in braving the cold and wind to capture the beautiful and surprising images herein. That is no mean feat, one which takes it’s toll on artist and equipment alike. As a poet myself, I applaud her willingness to make the reader scratch her/his head over unfamiliar words and phrases when using “safe” thoughts would be easier. But the pay-off is there.
While this is a book to be read and perused any time of the year, I think I’m going to pull it up on my e-reader again in the depths of summer when a shiver would be just the thing.
