Hetta Coffey is a sassy Texan with a snazzy yacht, and she's not afraid to use it!
A globe-trotting engineer with adventure in her soul, Hetta is determined to solidify her relationship with her long-distance boyfriend, Jenks Jenkins. What better place for a romantic interlude than aboard her yacht in Mexico's hauntingly beautiful and solitary Sea of Cortez?
But where Hetta goes, trouble follows, and chaos is sure to ensue. After a run-in with a couple of sea serpents that threaten to rock the boat, she nevertheless decides to take on a project in the Mexican port city of Guaymas. After all, Jenks is headed back to Kuwait, so why not cash in on the best of both worlds by picking up a few pesos while living aboard her boat in Mexico?
Once again Hetta's indomitable spirit, stubborn independence and penchant for deceit will keep the reader in stitches as she launches herself and her best friend, Jan, into a sea of trouble. A pesky parrot, a drunken aunt, and a shadowy figure who is handsome in a "criminal sort of way" lead to murder, mayhem, kidnapping, and run-ins with several federal agencies on both sides of the border.

I only made it to chapter three. I find Hetta to be a self-important pain in the aspidistra. She seems to think she's so cute and clever, it just turned me off. Also, the constant reference to previous books' plots bothered me. I'm a sour puss, I guess. If this is your thing, please enjoy it. But leave me out.Product details

Just Add Trouble Hetta Coffey Series Book 3 edition by Jinx Schwartz Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
All series' seem to deteriorate after the first two or three books, when the novelty wears off, but this one is fairly consistently funny. But, then, I think so because Hetta and Jan remind me so much of my sister and me. I even drink Tecate and have a New Year's Eve "thing". However, my sister was the one who was quick on the trigger with the out-of-left-field zingers like Hetta. True, the stories are somewhat over the top and Hetta's actions are not really in keeping with her purported level of intelligence but if they were, as she would say, "where's the fun in that?" I will read them all, even if they start to get a little old because she's just too funny. On the other hand, my BFF can't stand her and won't go near them. So, once again, as Hetta would say (a little too often?), "go figure".
Although the books are, for the most part, well-written, there is something that continues to plague me. I am forever reading kudos to the editors, at the end of books, when they don't look to me like they've even been edited. This series is mostly typos, which don't bother me quite as much as grammatical errors but I still think an "editor" would catch them. In addition to the typos, things like "pouring over a map" and "return back" should certainly stand out. I just don't get it. Based on the evident lack of qualifications for editors, these days, I certainly missed my calling because I could be a real one. "Who knew?"
Hetta finds her way hurt and in serious trouble with both the Mexican government and Arizona Border patrol. To her rescue is retired Detective Martinez; who seems to be the go too guy for getting her out of trouble. Sometimes it doesn't seem worth the energy to be at her beck and call. She finds her way back to Mexico and this time it's Nacho kidnapping her to save her from her menus Pack who wants her dead. Nacho has a mission to complete and I think Hetta turns out to be the ploy while she doesn't know it. Nacho fires a shot directly at her. She hits the ground and feels warm blood and then .......
It took me a little while to warm up to this book but once the story got going I couldn't put it down. Hetta, the main character, is full of personality with a tendency to find trouble. I really loved the bird and some of the minor characters. I hope I meet them again in later books. There were a couple of things I was confused about that were perhaps better explained in previous books. (This was my first Hetta Coffey book) I wasn't sure exactly what Hetta did for a living so the sections about her job were not very clear. Also, the relationship between Jan and Hetta was not clear until nearly the end of the story. I spent most of the story wondering if they were sisters. Other than that I had a lot fun reading this story.
I got this (#3 in the Hetta Coffey series) as a BookBub freebie, didn't get around to reading it right away then a month later they offered Book 4 as a freebie. So I decided to read #3 ...and I was hooked. Apart from wanting to reach through the pages & shake or slap the wacky heroine, Hetta, who cannot keep her yap shut and lands herself & everyone within a ten mile radius of her in constant turmoil, this is one fun ride. I love the author's upbeat writing style & the way she manages to pull everything together into a satisfying ending which does not leave you cliff-hanging and in need of buying the next book, but makes you WANT to get the next one to see what mayhem Hetta will wreak next.
From my point of view, it was great having the action take place (mostly) on a boat cruising the Sea of Cortez between Baja and Sonora since I have a daughter-in-law from Hermosillo and have visited San Carlos several times.
If you like boating, Mexicans and/or Mexican food, drinking copious amounts of wine and don't mind dealing with a wacky, wise-cracking 30-something who attracts disasters like honey attracts flies, then kick back and be prepared for a fun read.
After reading both books, I visited the author's website and learned from people commenting there that the first two books really were important for the backstory. So I broke my rule of never paying more than $2 for a book & purchased both, read them. then read #3 & 4 again. Now I'm really hooked. I will have to break my rule again to get #5 & 6, and the author is working on #7 due out this July. I just hope she doesn't stop writing.
But maybe at some point there should be one entitled "Just think of 99 ways to off Hetta". No I don't really want her dead but just thinking of ingenious ways to do it could be amusing & somewhat therapeutic.
A great read!
This is the third book in the series and in this one the two female pals had me annoyed. They came off so needy and not near as likeable as in the first two books. Hetta is supposed to be in her later 30s and has a successful career but all that came through in this book was her desperation for her man to give her life meaning. I'll give book four a try then that may be it for me. The madcap adventures I can deal with but the clingy desperation is not enjoyable.
But leave me out.
